Choosing an N5–N1 word level: coverage, access and review
Higher is not automatically better, and you do not need to restart all of N5 if you already have a target. Try a short session at your intended level and see where the difficulty lies.
Prepared by Aptenyo with AI-assisted editing and checks against product documentation. Not official JLPT teaching material.
A product inventory, not an official word list
The product contains 10,291 entries: N5 1,273; N4 1,223; N3 2,276; N2 2,605; N1 2,914. These are Aptenyo’s content counts and study categories, not an official guarantee of complete exam coverage.
More entries create practice scope, but they do not prove faster learning or higher scores. Unaided recognition, reading and comprehension matter more than the size of a collection.
Beginners can test the process with free N5
Use free kana tasks in both directions—letter to sound and sound to letter—then place kana inside a few N5 words and short examples.
All 1,273 N5 words and kana are free, without registration. Evaluate the illustrated-card, audio and quiz workflow before deciding whether you need the other levels.
Experienced learners can start with a target
For an N3, N2 or N1 goal, start at that level. Return to a lower-level gap when a more basic word repeatedly blocks comprehension; do not assume every easy entry must be redone first.
Use context and part-of-speech filters when verbs, adverbs or one situation cause concentrated difficulty. Target the problem rather than replaying a whole list.
Review more than the number of new words
New-item counts are easy to see. Check whether a previously missed item is now answerable and whether an older word remains recognisable. Use favourites for selected words and repeated questions to test retrieval.
Auto-advancing cards and widgets add contact with words but should not replace active recall. Screen exposure is not the same as remembering an answer without prompts.
Know the purchase and device boundaries
N4–N1 unlock inside the vocabulary app with one purchase, without subscription or advertising. Your local App Store supplies the price. This does not include the separate grammar app or unreleased products.
Download media for offline pictures and audio. Keep a progress backup when moving devices. Restoring a purchase entitlement and transferring study history solve different problems.
